God Sees the Truth, But Waits
Short story by Leo Tolstoy
This story evolves around the character Aksionov, who is a prosperous merchant in the town of Vladimir, Russia, where he lives with his wife and children and owns two shops and a house.
One can find theories and beliefs incorporated in this, such as, supernatural belief, psychoanalytic , social condition, etc.
An incident for supernatural belief in this story is
the dream by the wife of Aksionov. She dreamt
that her husband returns from fair with grey hair which she thinks as a warning
to not let her husband to the fair. In early period, people believe in their dreams
and follow many beliefs. For example, people say the dream which we had in
early morning comes true and then if a black cat crosses on your way then it is
considered as a bad situation. Such that one example is the dream of Aksionov’s
wife.
Here, in this story psychoanalytic conditions are
also incorporated, where the mentality of the family can be seen. How Aksionov’s
wife would have suffered to manage her family. Those are the period where it is
difficult to manage the family being a single woman. On the other side, the
mentality of Aksionov, who was prisoned for someone else error. And also what
would be the condition of Aksionov when his wife asked him whether he is the
one who murdered the merchant.
In terms of sociology, how the society around Aksionov
will see him and how his children will be treated. And once when everyone came to know about the truth, the views of people change but can they give the life that he lost over the years, is a question mark?
