Intoduction:
The following esssy or an article is about how assertion of the strength of the virtue is connected to our daily life. The couplets (thirukural) that i will be mentioning has been translated by G.U.Pope. I have taken chapter-3, Assertion of the strength of the virtue(அறத்துப்பால்).
Couplets:
31. It yields distinction, yields prosperity;
what gain Greater than virtue can a living man obtain?
32. No greater gain than virtue aught can cause;
No greater loss than life oblivious of her laws.
33. To finish virtue's work with ceaseless effort strive,
What way thou may'st, where'er thou see'st the work may thrive.
34. Spotless be thou in mind! This only merits virtue's name;
All else, mere pomp of idle sound, no real worth can claim.
35. 'Tis virtue when, his footsteps sliding not through envy, wrath,
Lust, evil speech-these four, man onwards moves in ordered path.
Interpretation:
Firstly, we'll look on to the term "virtue". virtue is a good moral quality in a person. Some of the virtues are patience, self-control, honest, wisdom and knowledge, courage, humanity etc.
The first couplet tells us that, virtue will confer heaven and wealth; what greater source of happiness can man possess ? People do everything for health and wealth and so if virtue gives the both, what else needed. For instance, if healp people it will come back later in anyother form. Not only good deeds also bad deed that we do comes back to us.
Through second couplet we can get to know that there can be no greater source of good than virtue; there can be no greater source of evil than the forgetfulness of it. In short, no pain no gain or challenges leads to success . When people puts all their effort in their work to succeed, they will achieve it.
The third instructs us to practice virtue as much as possible, in every way. For example, if we want to learn a new language, we must practice it and learn daily. And there is also a proverb, "pratcice makes man perfect". So, we must practice daily to achieve .
The fourth couplet states that let him who does virtuous deeds be of spotless mind; to that extent is virtue; all else is vain show. The child's thought will be innocent, that is, what people around the child do, will be done by the child. and it is done by the out of pure and innocent thought.
The fifth couplet tells us that conduct is virtue which is free from these four things, viz, envy, wrath, lust, evil speech. For instance, getting jealous of others properity doesn't lead us anywhere or brings us anything.
conclusion:
In these ways, these couplets are related to the daily life of the people. If people continues to follow or practice virtue they can achieve heights in life.
